Audit trails that model budgets can survive
Model budgets fail quietly. An evaluation week expands, a new vendor key appears, and the original authorisation email is buried. Financial auditing for AI development budget controls depends on trails that still make sense six months later.
Keep three artefacts
For each material AI cost centre, retain the authorised envelope (amount and owner), the ticket or change record that unlocked spend, and a monthly reconciliation note signed by finance and engineering. Screenshots of dashboards are optional; those three artefacts are not.
Write for the next auditor
Assume the reader was not in the room. Avoid slang like “we burned a bit on evals.” State which model family, which environment, and which decision moved the envelope. This is the tone we practise in Control Room Cohorts.
Limits of the trail
An audit trail cannot invent tags that never existed. If your organisation lacks metadata, the trail will show gaps honestly — and that honesty is still useful. Learn more patterns on our AI budget controls page.
